The Ventura Film Festival originated in 2004 and has screened hundreds of films, regularly over 200 films during summer months, and has drawn recognition from the global cinema community. Over the years, the festival has developed into an important cultural gathering that joins film artists, environmental champions, and spectators from around the world.

Distinguished events have encompassed welcoming acclaimed filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the first ever world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend and Ian Cairns, quadruple world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA athlete Fabio Leopoldo, and the 50-year anniversary of West Side Story, which encompassed presenting the complete Oscar-winning ensemble of West Side Story, featuring Academy Award honoree/Golden Globe winner George Chakiris and legendary actor Golden Globe here recipient/Oscar nominee Russ Tamblyn. The Ventura Film Festival creator and executive director was chosen to participate, accompanied by many of Hollywood's leading celebrities, in the golden anniversary celebration of West Side Story and Hollywood's famous footprint/handprint ceremony recognizing Oscar winners Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, as well as Golden Globe winner Russ Tamblyn at the historic Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This celebration also functioned as the official BluRay introduction by Fox and MGM of West Side Story, which is broadly regarded by critics and fans as the greatest musical of all time.
